澳大利亚的标准机构为Standards Association of Australian，所以很多朋友把澳大利亚认证称为SAA认证。实际上SAA只是标准制定机构，而不颁发产品认证证书。SAA后来又改名为:Standards Australia Limited。SAA是独立的公司，与政府没有直接的关系，但是联邦政府和州政府是它其中的成员。SAA和澳大利亚联邦政府签署了一个备忘录，承认SAA是澳大利亚的非政府标准组织的最高组织。备忘录也指出，标准的制定要与WTO的要求一致。因此，有协议指出当合适的国际标准已存在时，就不用制定新的澳大利亚标准。澳大利亚的标准以"AS"开头，澳大利亚与新西兰的联合标准以"AS/NZS"开头。澳大利亚的标准与新西兰的标准基本与IEC一致，同时存在一些国家差异。澳大利亚和新西兰推行标准的统一和认证的相互认可，产品只要取得一个国家的认证后就可在另外一个国家销售。

SAA和CRP是病毒和细菌感染的标志物，细菌感染时二者浓度升高相平行，病毒感染时，SAA在康复期消失更快。不论CRP是否升高，SAA似乎是急性病毒感染炎症的临床有用标志物。
SAA在结核、麻风、类风关、恶性肿瘤、自身免疫疾病、病毒感染、肾移植排斥、淀粉样病变中均能升高。急性病毒感染时，CRP不像细菌感染时显著升高，它仅在一个狭窄范围内变化，临床需要敏感的病毒感染标志物。
SAA来自于载脂蛋白Apolipoprotein家族,是复合到HDL上的急性相蛋白.含数组、分子量约11-12kDa的蛋白. 人血液中的SAA基本上来自于高密度脂蛋白HDL. 有一组SAA称Constitutive SAA, 也就是SAA3,SAA4和SAA5,在肝脏合成后几乎不进入血流. 另一组急性期SAA, 包括SAA1和SAA2,由肝细胞产生后进入血流.
急性期SAA是人血浆中的主要SAA成份.
巳证明在病毒感染, 肾移植排斥病例中,SAA是一个比其它炎症相关蛋白更有用的标志物.
